Alabama International Education and Economic Partnership Facilitates First-Ever Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language in Alabama

For Immediate Release

November 20, 2024

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama International Education and Economic Partnership (ALIEEP), a leading multicultural education nonprofit in Alabama, proudly hosted the first Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) in Alabama on Saturday, November 9th, 2024, at Alabama State University. It marked a significant milestone in the growth of Mandarin language education and certification opportunities in the region, as two test takers participated in the exam for the first time in the state.

The TOCFL, a widely recognized Chinese language proficiency test administered by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan, helps individuals assess and certify their Mandarin skills. It is a valuable tool for anyone looking to study, work, or travel in Chinese-speaking regions. With this inaugural test, ALIEEP is proud to have opened this opportunity to local learners who are dedicated to improving their Chinese language skills.

“We are honored to have hosted the very first TOCFL in Alabama,” said Ms. Han, ALIEEP Executive Director. “Our goal is to provide our community and all Alabamians with the resources they need to connect across cultures and foster greater acceptance of those who are different from themselves. It is exciting to see more people investing in Mandarin as a skill.”

While this is the first TOCFL administered in Alabama, it is not the beginning of ALIEEP’s work in language education. For years, ALIEEP has been at the forefront of promoting multilingualism in Alabama, offering Korean language classes, implementing certified Korean language courses in K12 schools, and supporting the Seal of Biliteracy for Alabama students. By offering these programs, ALIEEP helps students and community members develop valuable language skills and build cultural bridges.

Moving forward, ALIEEP will be hosting the TOCFL exam annually, continuing efforts to expand language access and provide resources that support learners in achieving their language goals.
