Cultural Exchange Through Interactive Activities

Key Point: Sharing Taiwan Night Market Culture
As part of our cultural exchange activities, we visited a local church in Alabama and introduced Taiwanese night market culture to homeschooled children. Through PowerPoint presentations and short videos, we shared Taiwan’s famous night markets, popular street foods, traditional games, and the cultural significance behind these experiences.
Presentation and Student Engagement
During the presentation, I explained different aspects of Taiwanese night market culture and encouraged students to participate by asking questions and sharing their ideas. To create a more engaging learning environment, I used Taiwanese snacks, such as Prince Noodles, as small rewards for students who actively answered questions.
This created a lively and positive atmosphere, and many children were excited to raise their hands, join the discussion, and stay actively involved throughout the session. Their enthusiasm made the cultural exchange more meaningful and helped build a stronger connection with Taiwanese culture.
Hands-On Activities
To make the experience more interactive, we prepared hands-on activities for the children, including traditional night market games such as marble games and Mahjong bingo, as well as Chinese character matching activities. At the end of the session, the children also participated in a Taiwan flag coloring activity, allowing them to connect with Taiwanese culture in a creative and memorable way.
Purpose of the Activity
Through this cultural presentation, we hoped to help children in Alabama gain a basic understanding of Taiwan, Taiwanese culture, and the unique experience of night market life. By introducing traditional foods, popular games, and simple Chinese characters, we aimed to create a fun and engaging learning experience that allowed children to connect with Taiwanese culture in an interactive way.
We also hoped to encourage cultural curiosity and open-mindedness by giving them the opportunity to experience a different culture beyond the classroom. Through this activity, we wanted to build a small but meaningful bridge between Taiwan and Alabama through education, interaction, and cultural exchange.
