TOCFL Promotion

School Outreach at Park Crossing High School

I also visited Park Crossing High School, which is currently the only high school in Montgomery offering Chinese language courses. Because the school follows an IB program and has strong world language requirements, students have valuable opportunities to continue foreign language learning. Park Crossing High School is listed as an IB World School and offers IB programs on campus.

The current Chinese teacher, Ms. Yang, teaches 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who are currently taking Chinese I, with approximately 110 students enrolled.
Through this outreach, I hoped to help students better understand how language learning can create future academic and professional opportunities while also promoting the value of Mandarin education in Alabama.

Promotional Flyer Distribution

To support TOCFL promotion, I designed a clear and informative flyer that introduced the basic concept of the exam, including what TOCFL is, who it is for, how to register, and key details such as the test date, location, and registration deadline.

I distributed the flyers during school visits and used them as a reference when introducing the exam to students. The materials helped present essential information in a simple and organized way, making it easier for students to understand the purpose of the test and how to participate.

Promotion Results

Before the end of my internship, nearly 20 students had completed the TOCFL registration form after participating in the promotional sessions and classroom introductions. Although the registration process was still ongoing, this response showed growing student interest in Chinese language certification and the Alabama Seal of Biliteracy opportunity.

Considering that only two people had registered for the TOCFL exam over the previous two years combined, and that no one registered during the previous year, having nearly 20 students willing to complete the registration form this year was already far beyond expectations. This result demonstrated that consistent school outreach, classroom engagement, and accessible promotional materials could significantly increase student awareness and interest in language certification opportunities.

This experience also demonstrated how school outreach, classroom engagement, and accessible promotional materials can help encourage students to explore additional language-learning opportunities beyond their regular coursework.
