Dr. Eric Mackey
Dr. Eric G. Mackey has served as Alabama’s State Superintendent of Education since April 2018, leading major initiatives under his strategic plan, Alabama Achieves. His work has strengthened literacy, STEM, Career Technical Education, and workforce development while emphasizing the whole-child approach. Under his leadership, Alabama has seen rising high school graduation and college-and-career readiness rates, record enrollment in career technical programs, and national recognition in workforce development and computer science education.
Mackey has also expanded professional development opportunities, including large-scale training in the science of reading and the certification of Academic Language Therapists. His steady leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic earned him recognition as one of the “Top 20 Alabamians Who Made a Difference in 2020.” A former teacher, principal, and local superintendent, he now serves on more than 30 state and national boards, including leadership roles with the Alabama-Korea Education and Economic Partnership and the Education Commission of the States. He holds degrees from Jacksonville State University and The University of Alabama and remains active in community service through Rotary, Meals on Wheels, Boy Scouts, and teaching youth Sunday School.
