What is the ALIEEP - AUM Resident Program?

The ALIEEP–AUM Resident Program is a collaboration between ALIEEP and Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) that allows international educators to pursue a graduate degree while gaining practical teaching experience in Alabama schools. Our program enables qualified international educators to teach in accredited Alabama public K-12 schools. ALIEEP offers a clear, supportive, and affordable pathway for international educators to become a state government employee with full benefits.


As part of the program, educators will:

  • Enroll in a master’s degree in education program at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM)
  • Earn a US residency under an F-1 visa.
  • Gain classroom experience through a supervised practicum
  • Demonstrate their educational specialty to Alabama public school officials
  • Become a full-time teacher after graduation
  • Transition to H-1B visa and state government tenure

Your Journey Through The ALIEEP - AUM Resident Program

The Resident Program is designed to support international educators as they transition into the Alabama education system. The process begins with an application and qualification review, followed by enrollment in a graduate program through Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM). During their studies, educators gain classroom experience while preparing to meet teaching certification requirements. This step-by-step approach helps educators build practical skills, connect with local schools, and prepare for future teaching opportunities.

Your Journey Through the Program

Application & Initial Review

Submit your application, teaching credentials, and required documents for initial review.

Teaching Certificate Conversion

Convert your foreign teaching certificate to an Alabama professional teaching certificate. You need to complete the required evaluations, tests, and documentation to convert your teaching certificate.

University Admission

Enroll in a Master’s degree program at  Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM).

Teaching Practicum

Begin working up to 20 hours a week at a local K-12 school while pursuing your graduate studies, subsidizing tuition and living expenses.

Professional Relationships

Build authentic classroom experience, develop relationships with district leaders, and receive ongoing professional support.  ALIEEP actively provides guidelines and support during your stay.

Full- Time Teaching Opportunity

Upon graduation, transition to a full-time teaching position with local K-12 public schools.

Visa Support Sponsor

ALIEEP provides support to facilitate H-1B Visa sponsorship procedures.

Program Benefits

The program offers several advantages for international educators seeking to advance their professional careers in Alabama. Participants gain both academic preparation and authentic classroom experience through a graduate program. Through collaboration with universities and local school districts, educators build valuable skills and relationships within the education community. These experiences help participants secure a full-time position in Alabama public schools and transition to a life-long pathway to pursue a state government tenure.

U.S. Graduate Education

Join a Master’s degree in education program at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM), strengthening academic knowledge of the US education system. Having a master’s degree will also increase your salary as a teacher. If you already have a master’s degree, you can transfer up to 9 credits, reducing the number of credit hours needed to complete the program.

Scholarship Support

Eligible ALIEEP -AUM Resident Program participants will pay the same tuition as Alabama residents. In addition, participants can receive an ALIEEP Resident Scholarship of up to $5,000 per semester to subsidize their tuition costs while serving as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM).

Classroom Experience

Gain hands-on teaching experience in Alabama K–12 schools while completing graduate studies. Participants can demonstrate their specialty in education and classroom management at local public schools. A successful demonstration of your ability will secure your full-time position at the public schools.

Cultural Exchange

Share cultural perspectives while learning from students, educators, and local communities. Participants can engage in cultural activities in the classroom, becoming a culturally competent educator.

Career Oppurtunities

Successful completion of the pathway may get full-time job offer from local school districts. Participants will be eligible for transition to an H-1B visa, which is a semi-immigrant pathway for their permanent stay in the US. Also, participants can pursue a state government tenure with this program.

Eligibility Criteria

The program is open to educators who meet the required academic and professional standards. Eligibility is determined through a review of submitted documents and a free initial interview to ensure readiness for graduate study and classroom experience in Alabama.

Core Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in education.

  • Teaching certificate from an accredited institution in your home country.

  • Classroom teaching experience.

  • English proficiency for academic and professional communication.
