About the Program
The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program provides qualified international educators the opportunity to teach in Alabama K–12 schools for up to five years while gaining hands-on classroom experience in the United States. Educators work closely with students and school staff, contribute to instructional activities, and receive a competitive U.S. teacher salary and benefits. The program is designed to foster a meaningful exchange of knowledge and perspectives, allowing educators to share their cultural background while adapting to the U.S. education system. Beyond classroom responsibilities, educators engage with the broader community, building connections that support both professional development and cross-cultural understanding. Roles & Responsibilities
Educators in the program are placed in accredited Alabama K–12 schools, where they contribute to classroom instruction and student learning in a structured academic environment. The role involves working closely with students, collaborating with school staff, and supporting day-to-day teaching activities aligned with school standards.
In addition to instructional responsibilities, educators are encouraged to share their cultural background and perspectives within the classroom, helping create a more diverse and inclusive learning experience. The program also provides an opportunity to understand and adapt to the U.S. education system while building professional teaching experience in an international setting.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Teaching degree or certification from an accredited institution
- Minimum of two (2) years of full-time teaching experience
- English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent)
- Residing outside the United States at the time of application
- Recommendation or connection through an approved partner or institution
Program Expectations
As part of the program, educators are expected to
- Comply with J-1 visa regulations and program guidelines
- Participate in cultural exchange activities
- Submit periodic updates or reports as required
- Understand that the program is temporary and not intended for permanent employment
