On March 2, 2026, ALIEEP became the first agency to facilitate J-1 Teacher Exchange Visitors at Alabama’s accredited public schools and J-1 Interns at all businesses throughout Alabama.
ALIEEP, Alabama International Education and Economic Partnership, ALIEEP.ORG, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization supported by the Alabama State Legislature to support international educational programs and relations of the Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Commission on Higher Education. The US DOS designations of SEVIS J-1 Exchange Visitor Program Sponsor for teachers and interns officiated ALIEEP as the educational arm of Alabama, a function similar to that of the United States Department of State (US DOS), only for Alabama’s educational and workforce purposes.
The J-1 Teacher Exchange Program was made possible by the endorsement of Dr. Eric Mackey, the Superintendent of the Alabama State Department of Education, who served as Chair of the ALIEEP Board of Directors until last year. The J-1 On-the-Job Training Intern Program was made possible by the endorsement of Dr. Jim Purcell, the current Chair of the ALIEEP Board of Directors and the Executive Director of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education. Such designations have strengthened ALIEEP’s dedication to serving multilingual and multicultural diversity education and enhancing global workforce development in Alabama.
The Executive Director, Meesoon Han, was happy to announce that the SEVIS designation by the US DOS will enhance education in world languages, STEM, and other high-demand subjects in Alabama by connecting qualified foreign teachers to accredited public schools with the J-1 Exchange Teacher visa. ALIEEP can now facilitate a J-1 teacher visa for an initial 3-year term, extendable for another 2 years, and an On-the-Job-Training J-1 intern visa for up to 12 months. An intern must have a background in Arts and Culture, Education, Social Sciences, Library Science, Counseling and Social Services, Management, Business, Commerce and Finance, Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Mathematics, and Industrial Occupations.
